That was you, right? Well, good news is Greg Mottola has been finishing up a new film called Adventureland, and based on this hilarious new trailer (which just premiered over at Rotten Tomatoes), it's got an '80s Dazed and Confused vibe written all over it ... and me likey Dazed and Confused very much.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig (the new comedic love of my life), Ryan Reynolds and Kristen Stewart (OMG, what's Bella doing in another film?!), Adventureland takes place in 1987and follows an awkward kid straight out of school who takes a gig at an amusement park, falls in love, meets a bunch of maniacs and walks away with some pretty valuable life lessons. I had the pleasure of conversing with Jesse Eisenberg earlier this week during the NY premiere of The Living Wake (one of the funniest films of this year, no doubt) at the Big Apple Film Festival, and he's a very cool dude ... AND a big fan of Cinematical, no less. Check out the trailer below; I'm really looking forward to this one. I vividly recall the press screening, where every seat in the fest's largest theater was occupied by eager journalists, many of whom had sworn they'd miss whatever other films they had to as long as they could see this one.

It paid off, too -- the acclaim for the film was nearly universal. (Read Cinematical's James Rocchi's rave review here.) Now, in advance of the film's limited release on Dec. 31 (just in time to qualify for Rourke's inevitable Oscar nomination), Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer. Variety has it, and we've got it here, at the end of this post.

The trailer is good in the sense that it accurately conveys the tone of the film: moody, reflective, and only partially set in the wrestling ring. Bruce Springsteen's theme song is a nice touch. We get a few glimpses of Marisa Tomei, who plays Rourke's stripper friend (you'll catch more than a glimpse of her in the movie itself, if you know what I mean), and Evan Rachel Wood as Rourke's estranged daughter. Their performances are terrific, too, as is Aronofsky's direction -- man, I really hope this gets the Oscar attention that everyone thinks it will. It deserves it.

What do you think of the trailer? Does it make you more or less interested in the film? Let us know in the comments.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Eric D. Based on the popular Japanese manga and television series, this computer-animated 3-D version of Astro Boy is being produced by those wizards over at Imagi Animation Studios, and stars the voices of Freddy Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane and Eugene Levy.

From the synopsis: "Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers. Remember the other day when I told you about that so-called review embargo on Twilight? Yeah, well ... nice try. Seems most of the major outlets (mainly newspapers) have published reviews, and they're quite positive, with Entertainment Weekly giving the film a B and Roger Ebert giving it 2.5 out of 4 stars (I imagine that's a sideways thumb?). Cinematical will publish our first review (out of two) later on tonight, but in the meantime here's a whole bunch of Twilight stuff to keep you busy:

Moviefone has up a Twilight Beginner's Guide (written by our own Elisabeth Rappe) for those who haven't a clue what Twilight is or was or is about to become. Additionally, this week's Unscripted installment features a candid chat between Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Twilight author Stephanie Meyer. Oh, and feel free to vote in their poll for the sexiest vampire, male and female (um, Becks!).

2000 shows are already sold out this weekend for Twilight, and folks are currently projecting an opening of $45-65 million. Did Summit Entertainment step in sh*t, or what? Here's an entertaining article from the LA Times' Patrick Goldstein on "How the big studios missed the boat on Twilight."

Despite what appears to be positive feedback, Twilight is only running at 39% over at Rotten Tomatoes, though it's still early. Here's a quote from Variety's negative review: "A disappointingly anemic tale of forbidden love that should satiate the pre-converted but will bewilder and underwhelm viewers who haven't devoured Stephenie Meyer's bestselling juvie chick-lit franchise."

And finally, check out an interview with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart from this morning's Today Show below.

Above, you'll see Ben Stiller, returning as the bumbling guard, and Bill Hader, who's playing General George Custer. Director Shawn Levy and Stiller both chat up the film, claiming it's definitely better than the first one. And with a cast that includes Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais (all of whom are returning), Christopher Guest, Hank Azaria, Craig Robinson, Ed Helms, Eugene Levy, Bill Hader and Amy Adams, you can't really go wrong.

In the sequel, Stiller's Larry Daley goes in search of his friends (and museum pieces) Octavius (Coogan) and Jedediah (Wilson) after they're mistakenly shipped to the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. On whether this will turn into a franchise for the studio, Levy says, "There are rumblings of another installment. We would love to take this premise (further). But even to say there's a likely third film is premature. We're not going to jinx things."
It's the middle of the work week, and I think you need some violence to carry you through the rest. Yahoo! Movies has a new behind-the-scenes clip from Punisher: War Zone, which you can access by clicking the link or the scope of Frank Castle's gun. It's short, but sweet, with some peeks at the glorious violence that will make this a real Christmas treat, at least in my warped out world. There's not much new footage, but you get to hear from Ray Stevenson, Dominic West, Julie Benz, the controversy magnet Lexi Alexander, and producer Gale Anne Hurd.

The best part? Hearing Stevenson's real Northern accent. I wish we had gotten a few more videos like these, Zack Snyder style, showing off the Punisher's hardware or something. My fondness for Stevenson has been well documented here, so you will sneer at that wish, but they really needed to sell their new Frank Castle. I'm convinced he's the perfect guy for the part, I just hope the film lets him prove it. If nothing else, at least we get to see someone killed by chair leg. I know that scene alone is going to be responsible for 95% of the tickets sold.

It's true, I never quite got it." -- J.J. Abrams

Last night Cinematical had the chance to screen roughly 20 minutes of footage from the new Star Trek film alongside select journalists, Paramount executives and Trek director J.J. Abrams. Four scenes in total, each was a fairly critical component of the film -- and while hardcore Trekkers may have a few problems with the final product, there's no denying this rebooted version of Star Trek will kick off the summer of '09 in spectacular fashion.

Below, I'll give you a very brief summary of each scene, then spit out a few initial thoughts on it all before providing a few movie facts (based on what we learned last night). Some of this info will come as a welcomed surprise to those faithful out there, and some ... well ... let's begin, shall we:

Note: We'll be discussing plot points, so there will be spoilers ahead.

Scene Summary

1. Kirk's Introduction -- This was our first introduction to the Chris Pine version of Kirk -- a somewhat disheveled, but great looking punk who hangs around the Starfleet bar looking to pick up chicks. His wooing of one such chick -- who goes by the name of Uhura (Zoe Saldana) -- winds up getting Kirk into trouble with some of the boys. A fight ensues, and a man by the name of Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) steps in to save the day before urging Kirk to follow in his father's footsteps and join the Starfleet.
Continue reading Cinematical Screens 'Star Trek' Footage!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Where the Wild Things Are': New Images, Spike Speaks!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Images

It's been awhile since we heard anything regarding Spike Jonze's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, and after the release date was pushed back a year, folks started to spew rumors that Warner Bros. didn't like Jonze's version of the flick, how it was "too adult", how test screenings were making kids cry, how there were reshoots ... and all that nonsense. Cut to today, and AICN has up a lengthy interview with Jonze and his editor Eric Zumbrunnen from their offices, as well as two brand new images from the flick (one of which you can see above). The interview itself is mega long, but fans of Jonze and of Wild Things should definitely read it in its entirety, if only to feel better about where this project is heading. Here are a few interview highlights:

Jonze on where the film is at now: "We just locked picture about three weeks ago, and we'll probably finish all the effects by, like, May or so. Then we mix in May and we have our dates in October, so..."

Jonze on who's scoring the flick: "Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She did some of the score and is doing some of the score. Her and Carter Burwell are sort of doing it together."

Jonze on problems with the studio: "And I think that's what freaked the studio out about the movie too. It wasn't a studio film for kids, or it wasn't a traditional film about kids. We didn't have like a Movie Kid in our movie, or a Movie Performance in a Movie Kid world. We had a real kid and a real world, and I think that's sort of where our problem was. In the end they realized the movie is what it is, and there's no real way to... it's sort of like they were expecting a boy and I gave birth to a girl. So they just needed their time to sort that out and figure out how they were going to learn to love their new daughter."

Continue reading 'Where the Wild Things Are': New Images, Spike Speaks!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Discuss: The New 'Star Trek' Trailer is Now Online!

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Trailer Trash, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Over the weekend, the new full-length Star Trek trailer debuted in front of Quantum of Solace, as well as in shoddy bootlegged form over on YouTube. Thankfully, Paramount has finally debuted that sucker online in glorious HD, and you can check it out over on Apple right now. Go ahead ... we'll wait here.

Since I've never been a hardcore Trek fan (or Trekkie, or Trekker, or TrekWTF), I can't pinpoint all the little things this trailer either gets right or wrong regarding the Trek mythology. I will say, though, that it looks to have all the makings of a big, exciting summer blockbuster and I'm sure audiences will devour it come May. Later on this evening, Cinematical will be joining Trek director J.J. Abrams for a very special presentation of footage from the new film, so we'll definitely be back to let you know how it looks, feels, sounds, etc ... The very slightest rumbles and mumbles of its worthiness as an awards contender this season are beginning to issue from the earliest guild screenings, and I suspect that the weeks to come will only bring more buzz before the film bows in limited release the day after Christmas -- the same strategy that Paramount Vantage employed last year with a little film they like to call There Will Be Blood. The brand new full-length trailer for Star Trek debuted in front of Quantum of Solace this weekend, and since Paramount wanted to wait until Monday to bring it online, a whole host of folks have recorded it inside the theater and posted the trailer to YouTube. I'm sure the studio will make sure these trailers are removed from YouTube shortly, so either get your good look in now or wait until Monday, when the trailer will arrive via the film's official website.

Based on what we see here, though, the flick definitely looks enticing. My favorite part wasn't the opening with young Kirk or the ridiculous-looking action sequences, but when Simon Pegg (as Scotty) says something like, "I like this ship - it's exciting!" We get a little dialogue from the new Spock and Kirk, so I'm curious to hear what you fans think of the new look and sounds of Star Trek? Of course we'll have a more thorough discussion when a better version of this trailer hits on Monday, but feel free to throw in your two cents below.

Star Trek hits theaters on May 8, 2009.

Gallery: Star Trek

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sex Sells: New 'Bitch Slap' Trailer is a Riot

Filed under: Fandom, Movie Marketing, Images, Trailers and Clips

Since it's Friday and all, your good friends at Cinematical felt you deserved a little treat for working so hard this week. Remember the film Bitch Slap? We talked a bunch about it during Comic Con, and praised the film's oh-so-beautiful stars for getting out on the Con floor and plugging their flick for hours like seasoned champs. Well, they just released a brand new trailer for this dirty little slice of sexed-up awesomeness, and because it's a tad racy, foul-mouthed and erotic, you can check it out after the jump.

Inspired by films like Dragstrip Girls, Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill and Kung Fu Nun, Bitch Slap is described as "a post-modern, thinking man's throwback to the "B" Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950's - 70's as well as a loving, sly parody of the same," and it stars folks like Kevin Sorbo, Michael Hurst, Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor, as well as Julia Voth, America Olivo and Erin Cummings. Additionally, the very cool Zoe Bell (Kill Bill 1 & 2, Grindhouse) did all the stunt work on the film. Feel free to scope out two sweet galleries below, then view the trailer after the jump.
The film will arrive early next year.

Gallery: Bitch Slap

Gallery: SDCC: Hi-Res Bitch Slap Posters

</br.>
Continue reading Sex Sells: New 'Bitch Slap' Trailer is a Riot

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Red Sonja' Draws Her Spoiler-Filled Sword

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Scripts, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images

I'm a recent convert to Red Sonja fandom. Despite that she seems right up my alley (80s fantasy, chainmail, tresses as brilliant as my own), I've resisted reading the comics for a long time. Mostly because everytime any of my serious comic friends caught me eying one, they made fun of me. Also, there's always the feeling Red Sonja wasn't really meant for my eyes. But, I was recently convinced to buy Brian Reed's run, which is an excellent way to be introduced to the character -- and I know you all want to be, since she's getting that Robert Rodriguez/Rose McGowan movie in 2010.

And what of that movie? It always seems like just when you're getting into a character, all buzz on his or her movie vanishes. But luckily, we've got some new art, courtesy of the Movieset Blog. I've cropped a bit of it above, and we've added the bigger, boob-filled version to our Red Sonja Comic Con gallery below. I'm not sure why she seems to be pulling her sword out from the middle of her skull, but I'll be damned if Rose McGowan isn't winning me over as the She-Devil. This is the first time she's looked the part to me, but I'll have to see how well she wields it before completely coming around.

Attached to the picture (if you can focus your eyes) is a very detailed premise of the film. It's pretty spoiler filled, so read at your own risk. It's Sonja's origin story, her life as an outlaw, and her decision to join the fight against evil magician, Kulan Gath. It's total pulp, which thrills me, because that's what I dig about Red Sonja. There's slave mines, vengance, epic battles -- all the stuff of 80s D&D fantasy. Call me crazy, but I'm starting to get really excited to see this.

Gallery: Red Sonja Comic Con Panel

Check it out below:

2012
If Roland Emmerich hadn't chosen the career of film maker, I suspect he would have become a super villain as this film marks his third attempt to destroy the world (after Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) -- and fourth if you count Godzilla, though the big lizard confined the devastation to New York City. Evidence as to what can happen when a dripping faucet gets out of control, this teaser looks pretty darn spectacular. Whether or not the film has any soul to back up the effects remains to be seen, but it opens on July 10.

Up
This preview spends a fair amount of time reminding us of all the hits Pixar has had before giving us a glimpse of this newest effort. We meet Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), a grumpy old man who devises a unique plan for dealing with urban sprawl that's encroaching upon his home. Still just a teaser here, so story info is light, but I'm betting Pixar has another winner on its hands when the flick arrives in theaters on May 29, 2009.

Continue reading Trailer Park: Harry Potter, Armageddon and Pixar

Permalink | Email this | Comments

First Video from Disney's 'Prince of Persia'!

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Games and Game Movies, Trailers and Clips

Pictured: Our first look at Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton in Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

The first behind-the-scenes video from the set of Disney's Prince of Persia has made its way online, courtesy of Entertainment Tonight, and in it you'll get to see a glimpse of the sets in London at Pinewood Studios (where they're still shooting for about another couple of weeks), as well as a taste of what was done in Morocco and a quick chat with the Prince himself, Jake Gyllenhaal. But don't let Jake's regular old American accent fool you -- the dude has taken on a whole new accent for Persia, but you'll have to wait a little while longer before we're allowed to share the type of accent it is.

Cinematical was lucky enough to visit the set of Prince of Persia earlier this month, and while we can't really go into details, we have no problem placing a bet now that Persia will go down as the most successful (in terms of quality and box office numbers) video game adaptation of all time. Warner Bros. is first out of the gate with their Watchmen trailer arriving on Yahoo this evening. As for Star Trek, audiences will get to watch (and record illegally before uploading to YouTube, no doubt) the new Star Trek trailer in theaters before Quantum of Solace prior to its online debut this Monday.

In the meantime, feast your eyes on the glorious Watchmen trailer below. What do you think of it compared to the other trailers? Is it better? Worse? I'm certainly diggin' what I've seen so far, but my only worry is whether Snyder will be able to accurately capture the wide scope and philosophical undertones of this beast. Nothing against Snyder at all, but there's a reason why folks have had a hard time adapting this behemoth of a graphic novel. Based on this trailer, though, things do look damn good. Check out our recap of a half hour of Watchmen footage over here, and there are a couple galleries worth of images and posters for you to surf through below. Watchmen hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

Gallery: Watchmen

Gallery: Watchmen Character Posters

<p style="clear: both; Along with this image, Universal has announced a partnership with MySpace where you can win a walk-on role in the film. What you do is head on over to the flick's official MySpace page, become their friend, and then in 100 words or less leave a comment explaining why you should win the role (maybe you're, like, totally the biggest Apatow junkie on the planet!). Additionally, Judd prepared a special message on YouTube announcing the contest, which you can view after the jump.

Starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman, Funny People focuses on the stand-up comedy circuit and one comedian's near-death experience. It arrives in theaters on July 31, 2009.
Continue reading First Look: Judd Apatow's 'Funny People'

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Trailer Premiere: Roland Emmerich's '2012'

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

The first teaser trailer for Roland Emmerich's 2012 has just arrived online, courtesy of Moviefone, and from the looks of it the director has returned to his most successful end-of-the-world form for this film about the Mayan prophecy that predicts the world will end in the year 2012. Starring John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson and more, 2012 will follow a group of survivors as they deal with the catastrophic events occurring on their planet as the world as they know it slowly comes to an end. In addition to this teaser, you can Google 2012 and surf through tons of information about the prophecy -- including this site, Institute for Human Continuity, which allows users to register for a lottery number to ensure their chance of survival once that dreadful day arrives.

2012 is due in theaters on July 10, 2009, and you can find out more about the film over on its official website (which just launched with this teaser). So far Warners has released roughly 357 posters for Watchmen, and Paramount is slowly releasing an image per minute for Star Trek (though some photos are creepier than others; I don't know about you, but I'd like to see the one where Captain Kirk doesn't look like a serial killer). As you can see above, J.J. Abrams has finally released a nice, crystal clear image of his brand new re-booted USS Enterprise, complete with that "it looks just like the old one" shine.

Entertainment Weekly (you expected someone else?) managed to snag this pic, along with a few words from Abrams himself. He says, "If you're going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you're going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?" And I completely agree. Longtime Trekkers (Trekkies?) may not be getting the Trek flick they've always fantasized about, but at least he's not f**king up the Enterprise, right? Star Trek beams itself into theaters on May 8, 2009. More Star Trek images in the gallery below.

Thoughts?

Gallery: Star Trek

Permalink | Email this | Comments
